The South: The Water Tower and Batchelors Farm

Surprisingly little information I can find regarding this landmark. Legend has it that it was built in 1956 to supply the Chanctonbury Estate. The white circular tower has the capacity to hold 250,000 gallons. It lies just off Ockley Lane at the western edge of the Batchelors Farm Nature Reserve.

As water towers go, it's probably not that remarkable but it is conspicuous from Ditchling Common to the top of the South Downs and great for pin-pointing the Southern edge of Burgess Hill.

Batchelors Farm Nature Reserve

Burgess Hill Town Council purchased Batchelors Farm in 1993 and the nature reserve has 33 acres of pasture land for residents to enjoy as an extension of the Green Circle network. The designation of this area as a reserve with its own management plan may help to prevent new development, a fate to which the fields that are its near neighbours may not be able to resist.
